What has motivated you to continue pursuing your craft?įefe Dobson: Um, I could never give it up. Tommy2: It’s been about seven years now since your self-titled release came out and you definitely had a fair share of bad fortune to say. has done so many things… God, he’s right up there as one of the top producers for sure. Claude Kelly you know wrote “Circus” from Britney Spears and J.R. What are some of the names that you worked with in the recording process?įefe Dobson: Well, the single before “Stuttering” called “Ghost” I actually got to do with Kevin Rudolf who’s awesome (Young Money) and then after that, this single is with Claude Kelly and J.R. Tommy2: Okay, getting back to your album. Tommy2: Along with the other teen starlets – Amanda Michalka and Ashley Tisdale, huh? Actually, my latest single is called “Stuttering” and it was just played on Hellcats the others day which is awesome! Well, I was on Hellcats the other day.
Why don’t you talk about your new album.įefe Dobson: Well, it’s called “Joy” and it’s dropping the 22nd here in November in Canada and the 30th in the States and (it’s) very, very exciting, can’t wait. First of all I want to say I’m really excited because I’ve been dying to hear some material from you for quite awhile and I’m sure it’s been a very long journey for you. By this time she had signed to 21 Music (ironically a subsidiary of Island/Def Jam), and in November of 2010 she released Joy.Tommy2: Hey it’s Tommy2 and today we’ve got Fefe Dobson with us to talk about her new album “Joy.” Fefe how’s it going? In the years after she was let go by Island, Dobson also wrote songs for Miley Cyrus, had a track featured on the Whip It soundtrack, and never stopped performing, knocking a crowd of industry types out with a cover of "River Deep, Mountain High" at the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Showing that perhaps the label was wrong to doubt her appeal, songs from the album were covered by Jordin Sparks, Selena Gomez, and the Norwegian girl group Lilyjets. The singer's sophomore album, Sunday Love, was slated for release in 2006 but due to the commercial failure of the two singles issued ahead of time, she was instead dropped by her label. As lead single "Take Me Away" began to make noise online and at radio, Dobson participated in Camplified 2003, a tour of East Coast youth camps that also featured fellow up-and-comer Skye Sweetnam. For her part, the 18-year-old cited vocal and songwriting influences ranging from Judy Garland to Kurt Cobain. The album showcased Dobson's brassy vocals over a pop-alternative, radio-ready groove skating between styles and incorporating plenty of electric guitar dynamics. Fefe Dobson was a young Toronto-based songstress who brokered demo recordings and a series of solid industry showcases into a deal with Island/Def Jam, which issued her eponymous debut in October 2003.
